How to create an item

14 min readUpdated October 29, 2026

Add a product or service: it appears on your sales screen, ready to sell in one tap.

Items are the products and services you sell with Tunder. Create an item once, and it appears on your sales screen, ready to be added to a ticket in one tap.

Only the title is required. Every other field is optional, and you can change it later. Pick the app or the back-office (on a computer) below.

Create an item from the app

The screens below are from the Tunder app on a phone or tablet.

  1. Open your item list

Tap the menu icon ☰ at the top left, then Items.

  2. Tap the + button

It is at the bottom right of the Items screen.

  3. Discover the item form

The “New item” form opens. Here is the whole screen, from top to bottom. Only the title is required: every other field is optional.

    • Photo: the circle at the top of the form. Tap it to take a photo, choose one or add an illustration (see the next step).
    • Title: the name of the item, shown on the sales screen and on the receipt. This is the only required field: with no title, the form shows “The title can't be empty” and the item is not saved.
    • Price: the price you sell the item for, as your customer pays it (for example 1.30). The ⋮ button to the right opens the price options: variable price and negative price.
    • Margin calculation: under the price, Tunder invites you to add a purchase price. The margin appears as soon as you enter it (see “Read your margin”).
    • Unit: “Per item” by default. Change it to sell by weight, volume, length or time.
    • Category: files the item in a category of the sales screen, so you find it faster.
    • Tax: the tax (VAT, for example) applied to the item. It is calculated on the receipt, and its title is shown there.
    • Barcode: the item's barcode, to add it to the receipt by scanning it (Premium subscription). Under the field, a card suggests a barcode scanner: close it with the cross if you don't need it.
  4. Tap the circle at the top of the form

Choose one option: Take photo with your device's camera, Choose from library from your photos, or Add illustration. Tunder asks for access to your camera or photos the first time you use these options.

  5. Choose an illustration

The illustration library offers colors and hundreds of icons, sorted by theme (drinks, bakery, clothes…).

  6. Choose a unit

By default, an item is sold “Per item”. If you sell by weight, volume, length or time, choose the matching unit: gram, kilogram, pound, ounce, liter, centimeter, meter, feet, minute or dozen. The price you entered is then the price for one unit (for example, per kilogram). When you sell the item, Tunder asks for the quantity and calculates the price for you.

    • Per item: the price is the price of one item, sold individually.
    • Other units: gram, kilogram, pound, ounce, liter, centimeter, feet, minute, meter or dozen. The price you enter becomes the price for one unit (for example, per kilogram), and the unit is shown after the price.
    • At the sale: Tunder asks for the quantity and calculates the price for you.
  7. Add a category

Categories group your items on the sales screen, so you find them faster. Select an existing category, or tap + to create a new one.

    • Categories group your items on the sales screen (drinks, dishes, desserts…) so you find them faster.
    • Choose: pick a category from the list, or none. This is optional.
    • Create: tap + to create a new category without leaving the form.
  8. Add a tax

Select the tax that applies to the item, or tap + to create a new one. A tax is either included in the price or added to the price, and it appears on the receipt.

    • The tax (VAT, for example) is calculated on the ticket, and its title is shown there.
    • Choose: pick a tax from the list, or none.
    • Create: tap + to create a new tax: a title, a rate in %, then tax included in the price (the price you enter already contains the tax) or tax added to the price.
  9. Set the price options

Tap the ⋮ button next to the price. Two settings, both off by default:

    • Variable price: the price is not fixed on the form, and Tunder asks you for it at each sale. Handy when the amount changes from one sale to the next (a quoted service, a market item, a dish of the day).
    • Negative price: the amount is deducted from the ticket instead of being added. Handy to give back a deposit, deduct a voucher or a credit note, or take an item back.
  10. Add a barcode (Premium)

Type the barcode of the item, or scan it with a barcode scanner. At checkout, scanning the barcode adds the item to the ticket instantly.

    • At checkout, scanning the barcode adds the item to the ticket without having to look for it.
    • A unique code: two items cannot share the same code.
    • Premium: this feature is reserved for the Premium subscription.
  11. Track your inventory (Premium)

Scroll down the form: the “Inventory” section is at the bottom. Turn on “Enable inventory management”: the fields below, greyed out at first, unlock.

    • Enable inventory management: the switch that unlocks the fields below.
    • Stock: the quantity you have.
    • Purchase cost: what the item costs you. It is used to calculate your margin, shown under the price.
    • Low stock alert: the quantity at which the item is flagged as low stock in Inventory. Leave it empty if you don't want an alert.
    • Out of stock: the “Disable item” option prevents sales when the item is out of stock. The item is greyed out and no longer available for sale.
    • Save and create an item: the green button at the bottom of the form saves the item and opens a blank form right away.
    • Premium: this feature is reserved for the Premium subscription.
  12. Read your margin

Once you enter a purchase cost, your margin appears under the price. It is calculated on the price excluding tax: an item sold $4.50 with a 20% tax included in the price, and bought $1.50, gives a margin of $2.25, or 60%.

  13. Save your item

Tap OK at the top right to save the item and go back to your list. Or tap “Save and create an item” at the bottom of the form to save it and start a new item right away.

  14. Find your item in the item list

Your item now appears in your item list…

  15. …and on your sales screen

It is ready to be sold in one tap.

Edit or delete from the app

The screens are those of the Tunder app on a phone or tablet.

  1. To edit: tap the item

Tap the menu icon ☰, then Items, then the item in the list. Its form opens.

  2. Change what you want

The form is the same as at creation: edit the title, price, illustration, category, tax, stock…

    • Same as at creation: each field is set as in “Create an item from the app”, above.
  3. Tap OK

The OK button, at the top right, saves the item and takes you back to the list.

    • On your registers: the change appears at their next sync.
  4. To delete: tap Delete

At the bottom of the form, tap Delete, then tap it again to confirm.

    • What happens: the item disappears from your registers' catalog at their next sync. This action is final.

Frequently asked questions

How do I create or edit several items at once?
Only in the back-office (admin.tunder.co, on a computer): Items, Items tab, “Import” button (Premium subscription feature). Before importing, click “Download the template” (an empty Excel workbook) or export your catalog with the “Export” button. Fill in one row per item, drag the file into the window, check the list, then click “Go to review” and “Import”.
What file format does the import need?
An Excel workbook (.xlsx) in the Tunder template format. CSV files are not read by the import. If Tunder says “This file doesn't match the expected template”, or the file comes from another shop or an older version, download your shop's template and copy your rows into it.
How do I update my existing items in bulk (prices, taxes, stock…)?
In the back-office (admin.tunder.co, on a computer): Items, Items tab, export your catalog with the “Export” button, edit the columns in Excel, then import the file again with “Import”. A row whose “item ID” column matches an item updates it; a row with no ID creates a new item. An empty cell erases that item's value, while a missing column changes nothing.
What is required in the import file?
Only the item title. A row with no title is flagged “To fix”: fill it in or remove it from the import. Price, category, tax and the rest are optional, and a missing or unreadable price counts as 0.
What happens to a category or tax that doesn't exist yet?
The import does not create categories or taxes: create them in Tunder first. An item whose category or tax is unknown is imported without it. You can assign it afterwards to several items at once, in the back-office: Items, Items tab, tick the items then “Change category” or “Change tax”.
Does the import add item photos?
No, the file contains no illustration. An updated item keeps its own, and a created item has none: add one afterwards from its form.
How do I change the category or tax of several items?
Only in the back-office (admin.tunder.co, on a computer): open Items, Items tab, then tick the items concerned. An action bar appears: “Change category”, “Change tax”, “Remove category” or “Remove tax”.
How do I delete several items at once?
Only in the back-office (admin.tunder.co, on a computer): open Items, Items tab, tick the items, then click “Delete” in the action bar and confirm. They disappear from your registers' catalog at their next sync. This action is final.
What are negative-price items for?
A negative-price item takes its amount off the ticket instead of adding it. Use it to give back a deposit (bottle, glass), deduct a voucher or a credit note, or take an item back. Turn on “Negative price” in the price options, with the ⋮ button next to the price on the form.
What are variable-price items for?
A variable-price item has no fixed price: Tunder asks you for the price at each sale. Use it when the amount changes from one sale to the next, for example a quoted service, a market item or a dish of the day. Turn on “Variable price” in the price options, with the ⋮ button next to the price on the form.
How do I sell an item by weight or volume?
Choose the matching unit (kilogram, liter, meter…) on the form. The price you enter is then the price for one unit, and Tunder asks for the quantity when you sell.
